A year into the pandemic lockdown, several Cultural Agents finally came together. Tested and symptom-free, their bittersweet smiles gave away that their joy of reuniting was tainted by the suspicion of yet another farewell.

For those who were there for the last time, bidding farewell to The Bar was akin to saying goodbye to the dream of returning the scene to its glory days.

1 Os empresários bilionários (CMB) representados por marqueteiros (A Marca) forneciam cerveja gratuitamente (bonificação) para os agitadores culturais (Agentes), 2 que em troca associavam seu produto à cena (contrapartida). 3  Se a parceria funcionasse, além da bonificação, as Agentes passariam a ganhar dinheiro diretamente (patrocínio).

1 The billionaire business owners (MBC) represented by marketers (The Brand) would provide free beer (bonus) to cultural organizers (Agents), 2 who in turn would associate their product with the scene (brand exposure). 3 If the partnership worked, beyond the bonus the Agents would start earning money directly (sponsorship) from The Brand.

The Agents had taken a bet on partnering up with The Brand and accepted the bonus on the promise of sponsorship. However, when it came to signing the sponsorship contract in the thrilling months of early 2020, The Brand backed out. The pandemic hit, the market changed, and the scene was no longer a marketing pillar for them.

Por anos, os Agentes apostaram nessa parceria, aceitando as bonificações com a esperança de um patrocínio no horizonte próximo. Quando o momento de assinar o contrato de patrocínio finalmente chegou, nos promissores primeiros meses de 2020, A Marca recuou. Com a chegada da pandemia, o mercado de cervejas mudou e, de repente, a cena não era mais valiosa para suas estratégias de marketing.

Reclamar d’A Marca sempre foi comum, mas agora estava pior. A Marca, uma cervejaria filha da Corporação Multinacional de Bebidas (CMB), desempenhava um papel importante na cena da CidadeSul. Sem o devido apoio público para as festas, muitos Agentes dependiam da venda de bebidas alcoólicas para custear seus eventos. Por isso, uma relação com A Marca, ou a falta dela, frequentemente determinava o que um Agente conseguia ou não fazer. Funcionava assim:

Complaining about The Brand had always been common, but now it was worse. The Brand, a beer company part of the Multinational Beverage Corporation (MBC), was very important for the CitySouth's scene. With no public support, many Agents made their living from ticket and alcohol sales at the parties. Because of this, a relationship with The Brand, or the lack thereof, often dictated what an Agent could or couldn't achieve. The setup went like this:

Only one project managed to keep its funding intact: a compilation from Guxoy's label.

Exato. A história é a seguinte: elas começaram a fazer cerveja em casa, só que deu certo super rápido e logo não conseguiam mais atender à demanda que tinham. Aí, correram atrás de investimento e montaram uma pequena fábrica. Mas, como elas fazem cervejas meio sofisticadas para mercados de nicho, acabou que o problema se inverteu e ficaram com mais capacidade de produção do que demanda. Pra dar vazão a essa estrutura, elas me ofereceram fazer uma cerveja simples e gostosa com o nome d’O Bar para ser vendida aqui. Para elas, não faz tanto sentido associar o nome delas a cervejas mais simples. A parceria estava ótima, eu ia lançar uma cervejinha delícia, mas, com o Bar fechando, pensei no seguinte …
That's them. So, they started making beer at home but it started to take off so much that they couldn't keep up with the demand. Then they got some investment money and set up a small factory, but since they make like really sophisticated brews for niche markets, they ended up with more capacity than demand. So to make the most of this, they offered to make this simple but tasty beer under The Bar's name, to be sold here. It's not that exactly beneficial for them to be associated with simpler brews.  The partnership was great but since The Bar is closing, I thought maybe we could….

The Squema drop was met with excitement and the Agents were all set to move the stock.

The first person to buy in on it was Lorraine, a well-heeled friend who's always game for raves. To amp up her virtual birthday blowout, she had a stash of Squema sent to every invitee.

Then there was Dhalia's sister, a restaurant owner, who not only liked the beer but was also touched by the cause. She bought a bunch to sell through her delivery service.

Teve também a irmã da Dhalia, dona de um restaurante, que além de gostar do produto, quis apoiar a causa. Ela garantiu uma boa quantidade para revender pelo seu serviço de entrega.

Another was Drezil's girlfriend's uncle, who had no clue about what a scene even was, but was spellbound by how Squema perfectly suited his taste.

Outro foi o tio da namorada do Drezil, que nem fazia ideia do que era a cena, mas ficou encantado com o sabor da Squema e como encaixava perfeitamente no seu paladar.

The Agents even managed to push Squema onto an online organic grocery platform, which picked it up to be part of their curated monthly baskets.

Os Agentes também conseguiram colocar a Squema em um mercadinho de orgânicos online, que incluiu a cerveja nas cestas prontas que vendiam mensalmente.

With a variety of different customers, sales strategies, and stories, the Agents ensured that Squema's stock was sold out. Funds for the compilation were secured, just as they'd hoped.

Com uma variedade de clientes, histórias e estratégias de venda, os Agentes terminaram com o estoque de Squema. Os fundos para a coletânea estavam assegurados, exatamente como eles esperavam.

A few months later, with the pandemic coming to an end and the compilation finally landing in their hands, the Agents were buzzing with enthusiasm. The confidence stemming from their recent accomplishment sparked their ambition to dream bigger. There were talks of making more compilations, acquiring sound systems, filming a scene documentary, hosting a big local festival, all potentially powered by Squema sales. Those more grounded among them liked the idea but knew it wasn't going to be that simple.
Alguns meses depois, com a coletânea já em mãos e a pandemia se aproximando do fim, as Agentes se sentiam entusiasmadas. A confiança recém-conquistada com esse feito as inspirou a sonhar mais alto. Falavam em criar outras coletâneas, patrocinar festas, adquirir sistemas de som, lançar um documentário sobre a cena, e até produzir um festival local. Tudo potencialmente financiado pelas vendas da Squema. Aqueles mais pé no chão simpatizavam com a ideia, mas sabiam que não seria tão simples assim.
This all sounds great, but not practical unless Ursula decides to provide us with free beers every month.
Tudo muito lindo, mas inviável caso a Ursula não nos dê cerveja de presente todo mês.
Plus, we'd need to set this up as a company, and we are a bit too many and it'd be a bit too much.

Guys, a cooperative isn't a collective, it's a distinct form of business structure. There are different kinds, but the worker co-op model is like the most classic. It's the setup where the employees of a company also happen to be its owners, and they're the ones deciding what the company does, why it exists, and how it manages its finances. This is different from when a handful of investors, not engaged in any work, just make the decisions and reap the profits. It's as if a restaurant were owned by the waiters, chefs, and cleaning staff. It's supposed to be more democratic because it's about the common good of everyone involved, not just a select few owners. Anyway, I don't know all the details, but I think it could be a way forward for us.
Amiges, uma cooperativa não é um coletivo, é tipo um outro modelo de empresa, tá ligado? Há vários tipos, mas o modelo do sócio-trabalhador é o mais clássico. É quando os trabalhadores de uma empresa também são os proprietários e decidem o que ela faz, por que existe, como gasta dinheiro... É diferente do esquema onde poucos sócios que botaram grana, não trabalham e ficam só decidindo o que os outros fazem, colhendo o lucro. É tipo, sei lá, um restaurante onde os garçons e os cozinheiros são os donos. Em teoria é um modelo que tende a ser mais democrático, porque acaba refletindo o bem comum de todos envolvidos na empresa, não só de uns poucos donos. Enfim, não sei tão bem os detalhes, mas acho que pode ser um caminho pra gente.

Ursula's explanation sparked curiosity among the Agents. They were buried in their phones, searching for explanations and examples of cooperatives. They bounced ideas off each other, debating how the model could work, anticipating potential problems and sketching out solutions. In the midst of this brainstorm, Dhalia called for silence and read aloud the Rochdale Principles, the foundational guidelines of the cooperative movement established in 1844. She was deeply moved by how these principles aligned with her innate vision for the scene.

A explicação de Ursula aguçou a curiosidade das Agentes que logo se lançaram aos seus celulares buscando definições, referências e exemplos de cooperativas. Enquanto discutiam a aplicabilidade desse modelo para o grupo, também projetavam possíveis desafios e imaginavam soluções. No auge dessa troca de ideias, impactada por perceber como os princípios de Rochdale – diretrizes sobre as quais foi fundado o movimento cooperativista em 1844 – articulavam tão bem o que intuitivamente entendia e desejava para a cena, Dhalia pediu silêncio e os leu em voz alta.

Months had slipped by, with the Agent squad caught in a weird limbo between a slow-paced negotiation with X-TREMA and a collective apathy for the Squema project. Not seeing each other since the factory, they planned a reunion at Rave-Redux—the first party to mark the pandemic finally losing its grip.
Meses se passaram e o grupo de Agentes encontrava-se em um limbo: presos entre uma negociação arrastada com a X-TREMA e um desânimo coletivo pelo projeto da Squema. Sem terem se reunido desde a visita à fábrica, marcaram um reencontro na Rave-Redux, a primeira festa para celebrar o fim da pandemia.

Each Agent had ventured on a different path during the party, but all roads led them to meet at dawn. Upon seeing each other, they began to share their individual experiences of the night. As they all tried to speak at once, the conversation stumbled and stuttered. Until it was paused and they shared a moment of silent laughter at their mutual confusion. Before they could gather their thoughts and coordinate their conversation, Drezil, his eyes wilder than those of his friends, made a proposition:
Cada Agente percorreu seu próprio caminho na festa, mas todos os rumos os levaram a se encontrar no amanhecer. Ao se encontrarem, todes despontaram a compartilhar a experiência que tinham tido. A conversa engasgava, pois tentavam falar e se escutar ao mesmo tempo. Até que, por um instante, pararam e trocaram um sorriso, reconhecendo a graça da confusão. Antes que conseguissem organizar o papo, Drezil, com um olhar mais maluco que o dos colegas, propôs:

Ever the early bird, Drezil showed up first at the party, soon bumping into his rave soulmate, Lorraine. Amidst loud hugs, catching up, sharing substances and impressions, Lorraine asked about Squema. She had a vague understanding of their co-op idea. Drezil reassured her that the project was on track, his report more enthusiastic than reality.
Drezil, como sempre, foi o primeiro a chegar na festa e logo encontrou sua alma gêmea da rave, Lorraine. Entre abraços efusivos, matar a saudade e compartilhar impressões e substâncias, Lorraine perguntou sobre a Squema. Ela sabia por alto da ideia da cooperativa. Sweetie, dig deeper into that, will ya? I've recently had a little reshuffling in family matters that, let's just say, were quite fruitful for me, financially. Depending on your co-op's master plan, I'd be keen to funnel some of it towards your projects, get a tax break in the process... you know, that sort of thing.

Metsi, too, made it early since she was eager to snap shots of the first post-pandemic party while it was still empty. She'd had also planned a face-to-face meet  with her visuals crew. They were taken with the idea of informally unionizing: brainstorming about standardizing prices, having a shared client pool, group purchasing of gear, among other things. Also on their meeting agenda was the long-standing idea of using the large amount of content they'd amassed to compile a scene documentary.
Metsi também chegou cedo, ansiose para fotografar a primeira festa pós-pandemia ainda vazia. Havia também combinado de encontrar seu grupo de colegas do audiovisual. Guxoy was the last to arrive, at party peak-time. As his foot hit the dance floor and he felt the bass pulsing through his body, an intense wave of emotion washed over him. He realized how much he missed this sacred sensation. Standing with his eyes shut, a familiar tune drew a smile on his face. It was the first time a track from their compilation was banging on the dance floor. The community's cheers vibrating in harmony with the music served as a tangible reminder of the long, arduous, but beautiful journey the track had undergone to echo on that stage. Thoughts of the Squema Co-op crossed his mind, causing a pang in his heart for the dream that seemed to fade away.
Guxoy foi o último a chegar, no auge da festa. Quando pisou na pista de dança se emocionou ao sentir o grave no corpo. Se deu conta que vivia um reencontro com uma sensação sagrada que havia sumido. Parado de olho fechado, abriu um sorriso ao escutar um timbre familiar. Era a primeira vez que soava alto, numa pista, uma das faixas da coletânea que haviam lançado. A vibração da pista o fez lembrar de como foi difícil e bonito todo o processo que a faixa passou até chegar naquela pista. Pensou na Squema Cooperativa e sentiu um aperto no coração pelo sonho que se distanciava.
His reflective trance was abruptly interrupted by an enthusiastic raver bouncing past him, shouting over the music: 'Wicked track brother Guxoy. Squema is the shit.'
Sua meditação foi interrompida por um raver empolgado que passou saltitando e exclamou: “Sonzeira foda, irmão Guxoy! A Squema é do caralho!”
